Immigrant Visas

Family-based immigration

The spouses, children, parents, brothers and sisters of American citizens are eligible for family-based immigrant visas. Only the spouses and children of legal permanent residents, however, are eligible for such visas.

The first step in obtaining these visas is for the American citizen or legal permanent resident to file an immigrant visa petition, Form I-130, for the relative.

American citizens and legal permanent residents living in the United States should file the petition with their local Department of Homeland Security (DHS) office. If both the petitioner and the relative are here in Suriname, the petition may be filed with the Embassy.

At the time you file the petition, further instructions on when and how your relative can apply for the visa will be provided. You should not make any definite plans until the immigrant visa has been issued.
